This is gonna be fun.

--------------------------------------
Some important things to note:

-Preregistration is strongly encouraged. Details are below. In short, you WILL get lumped in a pool with everyone else who didn't preregister. You don't want this to happen, do you?
-We have some housing available. It's not unlimited, so the sooner you let us know what you need, the better

--------------------------------------
Edits:
5/26
-Pools v1 on 2nd post
5/25
-changed payouts to include top 6
4/15/09
-added hacks section in rules
-proposed new idea for how to handle non-preregistered group
-added important notes

Brawl only: Teams and Singles.

Date/ Schedule:
Saturday, May 30, 2009
11:00am - Doors open. Registration/ check in begins.
12:30pm - Teams begins
Pools start shortly after teams/ during teams finals
Singles after teams

Fees:
-No venue fee
-Singles $10
-Teams $10 a person/ $20 a team
-Both members of a team MUST register at the same time!
-50/25/15/5 /2.5-2.5 cash split; 100% of entry fees will go into the pot.

Venue information:

Laser Tag of Baton Rouge
5871 S. Sherwood Forest Blvd.,
Baton Rouge, LA 70816
Phone: (225) 303-0386

NO OUTSIDE FOOD OR DRINKS ALLOWED

General Info:

-As organizer, I reserve the right to modify or change rules in order to accommodate the tournament's needs. I will notify players accordingly should a change be made on the day of the tournament.
-Similarly, as an organizer, I want this to be the best tournament possible. If you think something could be better, tell me how. We'll go from there.
-Singles will consist of Swiss-style pools followed by a double-elimination bracket.

Preregistration:

You want to do this, and it's free.

May 24th will be the last day to preregister. I need time to make pools and get other people to look over them. Thanks.

I want to create pools prior to the event so that they can be as balanced as possible. This is not mandatory but it will make the event much more fun. Read the pools section for more information.

Here's how you MUST preregister. You will make a post in the following format:

[This is an example]

-----------------------------------
LasT 3 Preregistration

Name: Randall
Nickname: FakeGeorge
Area: Baton Rouge, Louisiana
Equipment (if any): 2 TVs, 2 Wiis/Brawl, 2 Power Strips
-----------------------------------

[end example]

Just copy/ paste and fill in your info. I will then add these players to a list in this thread, so people can see who is attending. Thanks!

Rules:

KNOW THESE! I will hold every player responsible for knowing the rules. If you play a game on a stage you didn't know was banned, TOO BAD. No matches will be replayed due to ignorance of the rules.

Know the rules.

-3 stock; 7:00 (Ties broken by stock then percent. 1 stock rematch if even % and stock.)
-Team attack on
-no items
-best 2/3, Winner's, Loser's, and Grand Finals are 3/5
-Bring your own controller
-advanced slob picks
-Stage striking for first pick (players may agree on a stage or random)
-Stage bans: each player may ban one stage after stage striking occurs
-Modified Dave's Stupid Rule: a player/ team may not pick a stage that he won on previously in the set
-A game ending in a Bowsercide counts as a win for Bowser.
-Team Color Rule-If a team has Lucario on it, they get to be blue.
-Team ports will be 1221. R-P-S to decide if there is a disagreement.
-We'll call your match a few times. If you haven't show within 5, maybe 10 minutes, you lose.

No Excessive stalling. End infinites no later than 300%. The Infinite dimensional cape is banned.

HACKS:

Do not load Brawl through Homebrew unless you clear it with me first. The only hacks I will allow are custom music, infinite replays, and tags in replays. Nothing else unless you hear it from me first. Thanks.

STAGE STRIKING:

We will use STAGE STRIKING to start the set. NOT RANDOM (unless both players agree). Basically, Player A chooses one stage from the Starter list that he doesn't want to play. Player B picks a stage he doesn't want from the remaining list. Players A & B alternate until only one stage is left. This is the stage for the first match.

Stage List
------------
Starter:
Lylat, FD, Battlefield, Smashville, Yoshi's, Delfino, Pokemon Stadium 1

Counterpick:

Halberd, Brinstar, Castle Siege, Frigate, Rainbow Cruise, PS2, Pictochat, Norfair, Corneria (teams only), Jungle Japes, and Pirate Ship

Banned:
The rest
-----------------

Pool Info:

Pools will be run Swiss-style. Each match will be played the same as a bracket match, with the same rules applying. Look up the Swiss tournament system if you are not familiar with it. This is to save time but allow for decent bracket seeding. I'm looking at 8 players per pool, but interest will ultimately determine pool size. Only preregistered players will be placed into these pools. Either 32 or 48 players total will advance from these pools. I haven't decided yet, though time will be a factor.

Then, there will be a ninth pool with those who did not preregister. Only 2-4 players from the ninth pool will advance. These few players will either randomly fill in byes left in the bracket or be given the absolute lowest possible seed. This kind of seeding plus fewer advancing players is meant to encourage preregistration. I do not want to make it mandatory because I want this to be open to random locals who wouldn't preregister.

------------
Edit:

I don't think there will too many people at this who don't preregister, but if there are more than 16 (this number may change), than I'm considering running a double-elimination bracket. It'll have fewer rounds than Swiss and still allow me to get the top 2-4 from the non-preregistered.
------------

Why Swiss?? Well, it runs faster than a round robin. A pool of 8 players will require three rounds with 4 matches per round for a total of 12 matches. An 8 person round robin will require 28 matches. Basically, a little accuracy is sacrificed for a lot of speed. Each pool will be run by a person who is familiar with the process, so things should go well.

I will employ tiebreakers which look first at the head-to-head matchup, if it occurred and if there is only a two-way tie. If there is a three way tie or no head-to-head match, I will look at each player's opponents' match win %. Basically, if player A lost to better people than player B, then player A ranks ahead of player B. I am going to work on refining this more, so it should run smoothly.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I'm sure I forgot stuff (I usually do the first time through.), so please let me know. Also, feel free to ask questions and stuff.

Randall, if I get my Wii back from Ruse before this, I'll volunteer it. Will probably need your little brother's Brawl game again though. Also, you should probably split the "no items; 2/3 - 3/5 for finals" things into two bullets as I don't see what they have to do with each other at all. Also, are we planning to do pods for this or did you want to try it out elsewhere before deciding? If you know 100% we're not doing pods, I'd recommend buying/renting a bullhorn? Or at least some system that makes it easier to talk to the entire venue at once.

Hyro, we do these every now and then. They're usually a bit bigger than GW/Dibbz..but I've never managed to go. D:

Nick, I assume we're still teaming like normal? : )

Oh, on that note, Randall. Starting pools during team finals might be kind of awkward considering two of your normal pool runners are gonna be in the Teams finals at the time. ; P

Swiss is -much- faster than pools. It's not as accurate, but chances are that tiny tiny drop in accuracy won't mean much. It's like...5% drop in accuracy at most. Yes, that is me completely guessing. It's what most Chess Tournaments have been using forever though so it's gone through a lot of testing already and they run whole tournies like that, not just the opening of the tournies..so yeaaah. Gotta be pretty accurate. :p

I think big downside of Swiss is that it's a lot harder to run. Pairings must be created between rounds and tiebreakers are inevitable, so I think it's best to advance at least half of an 8 person pool. I think if there's a different person running each pool who knows how to do everything, then it'll be worth it. Still, it's less than half the number of matches a round robin would have for an eight person pool.

Nick, exactly how much room do you have?

Sudai, thanks for the feedback. It would be best to try pods first at a Gameware or two to see if it's worth it.

Swiss is much faster than pools

but the big plus of pools is that people get to play more matches (which is why it takes longer)
but usually in my tournaments, I want the local scrubs to be encouraged to come back so I set it up so that they at least get to play a bunch of matches before they get sent home :-D

anyway, i'll see if i can convince AL to come to this

I'm disappointed in the lack of Melee. IDK if Brawl's worth traveling for. Either way, I'll try to see if I can go to this.

I have questions:

Did we rent out the venue? If so, Is there going to be free laser tagging?

That would be awesome. I really think this will be worth the trip.

Yeah, it past stage discussions, we decided that the fin creates problems in 1v1s that aren't present in teams. It's mostly the permanent wall and DDD.

Laser Tag is awesome and letting us use the venue for free. We still have to pay for everything else: arcade, concessions, laser tag.

No melee makes me a sad, sad panda.

Why the shift, randall? There was a respectable turnout for both games last time, wasn't there?

Either way I'll probably be there rocking the melee setup, but still. Great lameness has been wrought.

I'd like to go to this, I'll pre-reg later when I can give a definite yes or no.

Also, no Corneria in singles makes me a sad, sad panda.
As a former Lucas main, and a current Ness main.... i know exactly why the lack of Corneria makes you a sad, sad panda.

We love Corneria for a cheap cheap reason :(

The reason there's no melee is because I think this has the chance to be a large tournament. I do think I'll need the space for Brawl setups, and that doesn't really leave room for Melee. Having Melee would only allow 12 or so Brawl TVs. That's not enough to do teams, pools, and singles for 50 or more people. I'm hoping this will get larger than that. So, if you really want a Melee tournament, host your own.

CJ, pretty much anything and everything will be needed.

****ing hell LA, Oklahoma was planning a tourney on the same day, no joke.
WAS planning? That means you've decided to pick a different date and come to this, right?

Awesome. I hope your crew will make it. For OOS, it looks like we've got Texas, Oklahoma, and Alabama interested already. Having Florida too would be great.

pretty sure all four of beaumont will come. hype
Cool. Get the others to preregister, thanks!

Housing!!! If you live in Louisiana and can house people, please let me know. I want everyone from far away to have a place to stay. NOLA/ BR is preferred, but even Houma may be better than nothing.

Randall, I can house probably about 7 or 8. That includes floor-space though, so I'm gonna highly recommend people bring sleeping bags and pillows and what not. Also, why not make a post for this in the tournaments listing thread as well? I think we could get a lot of attention over there, but that's just me...
