Directional Influence
August 2010 - February 2012

What's up everyone, Rapture here, presenting the newest podcast dedicated solely to the competitive Brawl scene, hosted by vVv Gaming. Since August of 2010, we've been bringing the community weekly episodes focusing on competitive Brawl, ranging from tournament experiences, rule set discussions and even interviews with top players and tournament organizers. It's about an hour of everything Smash and none of the bull****, though we do tend to screw around just a bit. xD

Directional Influence is hosted by three members of the competitive Brawl community:

-Rapture: Host and editor of DI, Rapture is from New England and is the newest of the crew to competitive Brawl.

-Will: Co-host of DI, Will is from New York and is considered one of the best Donkey Kong mains in the country, as well as concretely one of the most successful.

-Punishment Divine: Co-host of DI, PD is also from New York and not only participates in the competitive Brawl scene, but also helps with the organization of tournaments in Long Island.

So far, we've brought our show to Facebook, Twitter, vVv Gaming and AllisBrawl, but now we are here to bring the show to everyone here at Smashboards!

We release a new episode every Friday (sometimes earlier!) with familiar guests, interesting topics and some humor thrown in. It's always Brawl, always on-topic and always available!

Listen in!
This week on Directional Influence, the whole gang is here! Rapture, PD, and Will jump in with a recap of Xanadu, in which first-place in Brawl singles went to Vinnie, as well as discussion on PolyBrawl 6 and the upcoming Metaknight banned, singles-only event in New Jersey, Concentrate III. After that, the crew weighs in on the "FGC vs. eSports" debate. Can the fighting game community and "eSports leagues" like MLG ever cooperate? What is the future of the FGC? And how does the Smash community fit into all of this? That and more on this week's Directional Influence!

Episode 52 - What If We All Became Cyber Super-Jocks? (12/20/11)
Listen in!
This week on Directional Influence, the eSports vs. FGC debate returns to the show, but with a twist. We take out our trusty What If? machine, which we've never used or referred to ever before, and ask it the question, "What if major eSports leagues do pick up a fighting game(s)?" We take a look at the possibilities, positives, and negatives of what seems to be a possible future for the fighting game community. Guest co-host Doom of Juice Gaming joins Rapture to discuss this topic with CEO's Alex Jebailey.

Episode 53 - Land of the Free (1/13/2012)
Listen in!
Another year, another episode of Directional Influence! This week, Rapture is joined by Doom and Diem of Juice Gaming to cover the events of this past weekend at Apex 2012, Smash's biggest tournament ever and the first Road to EVO qualifier of the year. We discuss the best and worst of the event, the mixing of the Smash and FGC, and much more. We also cover a certain Smash 4 leak that has, apparently, characters to be included in the sequel to Brawl, then we wrap up the show with discussion of Rain's Sun Rise Tournament in Tokyo, Japan this upcoming August.

Episode 54 - Grandmaster (2/1/2012)
Listen in!
This week on Directional Influence, Rapture sits down with Allied of Juice Gaming to talk about his Smash career, his current play in Starcraft 2, his sickness and current life situation, and much more. Listen in for an in-depth interview with the one and only Allied himself.

Just a small announcement everyone.

More likely than not, there will not be a new episode this week due to my computer essentially killing itself last weekend and, thus, losing all my files.

However, we will be back next week, so stay tuned!

Are you guys planning to do any episodes on top players' thoughts on game mechanic's and strategies?
That's a good idea. We've actually had the idea of talking with top players about how they perform at a top level and how different it is from playing at lower levels on more of a personal/emotional/mental level than what we just see from watching them, but it has been on the backburner for a bit just because of recent stuff.

So, yeah, we definitely will be hitting a subject quite like that in the near future!

As for future episodes, and this is just on another note, we always try to get a new episode each week, but unfortunately other circumstances do arise. Last week, my computer completely **** the bed and could not get fixed until a good time after we would have released the episode anyways.

For this week, we are still trying to stay on schedule through the midst of Skype not working during our usual recording time (as we use Skype to record the show), a recent death in my family and, of course, Christmas and its Eve prior.

So, that's been it recently. Just a lot of chaos and whatnot, but we'll bounce back. Just wanted to keep you all informed.

Argh I hate how I sound. I had a million things I wanted to say but my mind went blank as soon as the interview started.

Anyway, I do appreciate the opportunity, and thanks for your interest in Project M. You guys did a great job.

I need to issue a retraction on one thing I said though. I said I ran the Brawl+ tourneys at both Apexes, but Bionic Sonic actually ran the one at Apex 2010. I was thinking ahead to the next Apex, where I am the Side Event Coordinator.

Thanks everyone!

@JCaesar: It's quite alright, we still had a great time doing the interview and I'm glad you joined us. They do get tough sometimes, so I can understand having trouble at times. We'd love to do another P:M episode if you'd like to follow up on things!

Also, remember everyone, next week's episode features AlphaZealot!

I really like the show you guys. I wish you would talk more about the tournaments you're going to and how you did like in the older ones. Cool new interviews, though.

Well thanks! We appreciate it and we can definitely do more of that. There's just only so much time in an episode that sometimes we feel like we can talk about things that concern more people than just ones in our area of tournaments and whatnot, but Will and PD definitely like talking about tournaments they go to (I need to go to more lol) and we can do more of that in the future!

In fact, this week, we actually do discuss tournaments, so definitely check it out. I hope you enjoy that and the rest of the episode, which will be releasing tomorrow afternoon.

Episode 15: I Might As Well Be Fatal (January 14th, 2010)
Listen in!
Episode 15 of DI is here! That's pretty legit. We have on the show this week Alphazealot, the Diddy main of the Midwest that is probably one of the most recognized figures in the Smash community. He sits down and chats with us about himself, MLG and other topics. Along with that, we discuss some East Coast tournaments and the latest of Gimpyfish's video series.
