The numbers used for APM averages come from full matches played in a tournament setting. And while Silent Wolf's videos come from real matches, they are mostly highlights of segments which are particularly flashy, which would skew the data. If someone where to tabulate a full match of SW's, I would surely add it to the list.

Hmmm... I'm sure this will be shot down, but I think you are overvaluing the apm of certain actions when you look at what is taken into account for RTS apm.

RTS apm does not calculate every single keystroke, only the end action that may be the result of several of keystrokes. Things that do not count as actions include selecting units or selecting abilities (be it through hotkeys or the interface). So if you wanted to use a spell on a caster unit, you have to select the unit, press the hotkey or button for the spell you want to use, then target that spell, but this is only read by the game as one action, because you only issued 1 order for 3 button clicks (not to mention the aiming of the of spell).

Now for smash APM, you have wavedashes listed as 3 actions. While it does require 3 button inputs, I think wavedashing really only amounts to 1 action, as when the player does it, they are not thinking "jump->aim direction->airdodge," they are thinking "wavedash." A JC grab would be 1 action, as the player doesn't jump, then grab, you just JC grab (a shield grab would be two though, as you shield THEN grab for a reason).

I do think that some of the APM cheesing that RTS players do intentionally is lame - it's really their APM during battles, when they have to think critically, that's most telling.

Mango has said he doesn't use the c-stick. sometimes for Puff u-airs or something.

so yeah. it's probably closer to 206.

FBM: The definitions of what constitutes an action has to be different from what it is in an RTS. In a RTS (well, starcraft), every race is on about an equal playing field for APM, and you can do multiple things at once. If you were to try to apply that to smash, it'd just be an ordered list of "which character is fastest?"

The other problem is that dashdancing would completely destroy the results. Dash dancing is quite likely to be faster than any other action you can do, so people who dash dance more will have a higher game-based APM even if their hand APM is identical to another player's.

Guys, it's not hard to do one on your own. A normal 4 minute match only takes about an hour or so to calculate APM, so if you're that curious go ahead and tabulate it yourself :) This is coming from someone who has done 2.

However, in Starcraft, there's a constant macro upkeep that has to be done. The hands should never really stop moving.

That's why I think I'm going to try and figure out the APM of different scenes in Silent Wolf and Lovage's new tech skill vid.

That's why I think I'm going to try and figure out the APM of different scenes in Silent Wolf and Lovage's new tech skill vid.
This has been covered many times. It doesn't matter whatsoever. We can't come to an agreement on what counts and what doesn't - so we just agree to disagree. An action is any input by a player at any time that is noticeable. Doesn't matter if it's just showing off while the opponent is dying/respawning or even if the player is recovering and has less options to increase his APM. It all balances out in the end if the match is a good matchup. If it's not, and the recorded player ***** the opponent, we take this into consideration and make a note of it on the first post. If you disagree, make a side note in which you include all actions done to boost APM that weren't part of actual gameplay and then make two separate APMs at the end - one in combat only and one with APM boosts.

And yes, this is really simple to do, however you need to have a solid understanding of the character you're calculating the APM for. You need to know exactly what button presses are done for each technique. I usually watch in 3-5 second bursts, hit play, watch for a few seconds, hit pause, and write down every technique that took place in that clip. Then, I go back through and make sure I got it all right. After that, I calculate exactly how many actions it took to perform each technique and write that down next to the technique that was done. Factor in DI, SDI, and whether or not the player c-sticks. If you don't know whether or not the player c-sticks (or for what he c-sticks and what he doesn't c-stick), you do two takes - one counting c-sticks and one counting analog sticks. Note that this double take method wasn't done until the most recent, but I think it's fairly accurate to do two takes unless you know for a fact what the player you're tabulating uses.

All in all it can take anywhere from 30 minutes to 3 hours depending on the length of the match, the character, and the technicality of the player. Either way, it's a very interesting way to spend your time and will also teach you some stuff about Melee you didn't know, like frame timing on techniques, why certain players choose to do things, how certain combos work, etc.

After an hour and a half of watching the match at one sixth speed, here's what 
I got.  These are conservative estimates; Peach requires lots of subtle control 
stick movements, and Vanz may have performed additional inputs that were not 
detectable in the video.  In accordance with Peach's style, he performed very 
few wavedashes (around 10) and even fewer L-cancels (2).  He rarely got hit, so 
DI was hardly a factor, and I discounted mashing out of both grabs altogether 
(since that's not really precise input).

these are valid points, but in Starcraft these exact issues are present.
progamer Protosses usually have lower APM than players for the other two races, and Terrans usually have the highest.
Games in which Zerg players use Mutalisks heavily result in extremely high APM counts because of how Muta micro is done.

I mean, APM isn't supposed to mean a whole lot beyond it's face value anyway. It tells you exactly what it sounds like and nothing more - how many inputs you are making per minute. This is true in Starcraft too. A lot of the commands in the APM in SC are spam.

I don't even think dashdancing is as bad as you think. Something like doing a lot of aerials/shines (shield pressure, drillshining, etc.) or SHDL is almost certainly faster.

Also, turnip throws out of shield count as two inputs since they can't be done with c-stick, just a friendly reminder.

Peach isn't that hard of a character to be fast with, it's just inefficient to play her that aggressively (on most of her matchups).

I finished counting the actions in a few Silent Wolf videos now. 
Some of the stuff was counted quite some time ago, and I got better at
 counting actions every time I tried it, so probably the newer ones are
 more reliable. OF COURSE I made mistakes. I don't know where they are,
 but it is rather impossible to do this without any mistake, so I am sure that
 I made mistakes, but the APMs should be roughly correct. If you think 
other matches would be more representative - count them yourself ;).

The new tech skill video was not released yet by the time I counted the last
 one, so I decided to count the APM of Zelghandi, which is  already
 very impressive. However, a high tech skill can not only be judged by the
 APM, as tech skill like ledgecanceling is hard to do, but does not require
 many inputs. I was quite surprised that the APM I counted on the two 
matches was not higher than the other APMs which already have been
 counted so far. Silent Wolfs combo and tech skill showoff speed is amazingly
 high, though, despite the taunts in between. I can remember that during one 
routine in Zelghandi, Silent Wolf reached a extrapolated APM of roughly 1000, 
which is mind-blowing.

Some annotations: I will now list the counted moves from every video.
 I counted everything I saw, including tech skill showoffs between stocks
 and everything. I counted moonwalks as 2 actions, one for the dash and 
the second for the half circle movement. You might notice, that the number
 of actions of the same moves sometimes vary. I did that because sometimes 
the control stick or L-button already was in the right position from the last
 move. Thus a shine sometimes can consist of 2 actions (down and b), 
but sometimes only of one (after a shffl for example). The inputs of 
moves in brackets are already counted. When I added "left" or "right"
 to a move, I counted one action more. This means that the player DIed 
that way during that move.

Wow, awesome job, Hatacatan. Since this thread began people have been begging for SW matches lol. Finally we have some answers!

Because of the smackdown that Silent Wolf gave to GenesisFTW in the first match, I think that his APM is going to be skewed. SW didn't get hit for three quarters of the match, so he didn't have to slow down his inputs. Without knowing any other details about the match, I would probably assume that SW's APM is inflated. But Hatacatan reports SW's APM to be 236, which is low compared to other Fox matches that have been posted. So why does this one-sided game yield an unexpectedly low APM for SW? If you watch the match, you notice that SW takes two of Genesis's stocks when Gen is below 50% (very APM efficient). So although the match is one-sided, the match also ends very quickly (shorter battles mean less inouts over time and a smaller APM). Unfortunately, I have no clue what SW's gimp rate is, so I cannot say whether these two gimps are typical or atypical of SW's average gameplay. Conclusion: The one-sidedness of this match in combination with his 50% gimp rate hinders it's likelyness of being an average match (or an average APM). With more data (more matches of SW), the validity of this match could be reexamined.

Your second match (SW vs. Eggz) yields a more reliable APM count because the game play is more conventional (i.e. players are constantly hitting each other). SW's 250 APM falls almost directly inbetween the only two conventional Fox matches that have been recorded (Zhu's 224 and Cactuar's 270). This is the kind of match data the thread needs more of! NORMAL MATCHES, not one sided tech-offs.

The third tabulation you did, "Silent Wolf" has actually already been tabulated. Last August, Stabbedbyanipple reported the video's APM to be 374, compared to your 352. Obviously, this video is among the most difficult to examine because of the gameplay speed, so differences in readings shouldn't come as surprise. You each provided an action log with your posts, so I began to cross reference the findings. Just looking at the first scene, there were a couple difference that I found. In fact, when I watched the scene myself, I found different results than what either of you two had recorded. This generates a third perspective and APM for the same video. In the end, different people are gonna see different things. Averaging the records is probably the best thing to do.

Finally, you recorded the whole Zelghandi video!!! Omg, I am astounded by your persistence. Very difficult vid, almost twice as long as the previous one. 448 APM!?! That's too sick.

Peach is played more technically recently in all aspects of her game, whereas Fox is really only technical when pressuring/shine comboing and showing off.

Although imo modern Fox requires a bit more APM overall than modern peach. But w/e its debatable.
