The most disturbing is October's tournament results alone.
MK is 3x the points of Snake. A new person (this will shock some) is half the points Snake is... Donkey Kong.

Edut: oops, I made an error, Zero Suit Samus was being bundled with normal Samus.

But, results can be flawed, since you might have like 5000 people playing Sonic. Out of the 7 people in our group, we have 3 sonic players, so do to his popularity he might just get played a lot. Tournament results alone don't show how good a character is. Hey, I mean Link is 28th on this list! But he is 38th on "official" tier list. We also have 3 link players. So, don't get to excited by seeing Sonic so high up there.

A lot of people playing a bad character doesn't increase his chance in getting top 4 in a large tournament. Maybe if there were 3 Sonic mains in a 16 man, that would make sense, but in a 30+ bracket?

A "bad" character is still a bad character, and shouldn't place high if there is anyone competent.

But whatever, I accepted that SBR didn't know what they were talking about when they ranked Bowser over Luigi, lololol.

What about when popularity doesn't seem to be causing the difference? Is peach really so much more popular than Bowser to be below him? (their difference is 11 slots)
And is the world so flooded with Olimars as to move him down to midtier?

Unless the odds are zero to begin with, it strictly does.

Sonic is not so popular that he would be scewing results. That's because most of Sonic's popularity is with bad players. Face it, most Sonic players are bad, and Sonic's matchups are terrible at beginner level (they get slightly better when the players get better). It's not Sonic's popularity that's getting him these wins, it's a few Sonic players being really good at the game and all the bad ones not even making it out of pools.

Sonic being 11th for October could be argued on popularity basis, but also the notion that Sonic is underrated. He's out doing Mr. Top Tier Falco

I'm just trying to point out that having 1000 bad Sonic players doesn't neccesarily increase his chances of winning that much, since the good players will simply beat all of them.

^^Sonic dashes more than any other character, so he's most likely to trip into stuff. And Sonic doesn't punish trips that well anyway (his kill moves aren't exactly fast).


Kinda funny that having more Sonic players at tournaments would actually increase the chances for other characters to win, because Sonic is disadvantaged against quite a few characters (even if most of them are slight disadvantages, it's pretty much easy street for anyone playing one of those characters).
