someone needs to explain this to me in low man's terms.

so i have to play 465 matches? and i have to use 13 different characters?

No, you have to use 14 different characters.
And no you're not playing 465 matches wtf.

Say 30 people enter.
You play 29 of them (cuz you can't play with yourself at a tournament ) in at most 3 matches.
That's 87 matches per entrant at the very most if there are 30 entrants.
Now lets say an average set going to the 3rd match is 10 minutes.
That is 18 matches in a hour.
To play 87 matches using that average it will be a little over 4 hours of playing per person.

Of course I'm expecting more than 30 people.
I don't expect more than 50. So lets do the math for 50.
49 x 3 = 147 matches
147 / 18 = 8.17 hours


This is 8.17 hours NOT taking into consideration that some players can finish 2-0 sets in under 5 minutes.
This is starting at 1.
The venue is open to 11.
It's extremely possible.

I couldn't allow for a lack of set ups, and I'm going to be doing my best to make sure we have an abundance.
As for slacking I can understand a very quick bathroom break.
When it comes for people being hungry (because don't lie, you will be), the venue is near multiple food places where I can have people who I'll have assisting me (that don't play competitive smash) do food runs to.

The duty of a food runner would be just that - You go get food so people in the event will not have to.

The duty of a set watcher will be to watch a set or two at a time and record the results immediately after the set finishes and bring them to me so I can get the next players playing as soon as possible.

You may only do one or both of a and b if you are not entered in the tournament.

>_> I'd totally help be a set watcher if it didn't mean I had to sit out. There will be plenty of moments where I'm sure I won't be playing matches.

I'd also be a food runner, or assistant food runner[help carry to goodies, keep track of orders, etc.], but yeah, that probably takes more time and I can understand not being registered for the event for that job.

I've been wanting to get into Melee, but it's intimidating and hard since everyone is so technically sound and I'm so noobish. The promise of being able to get LOTS of sets in makes this amazing for new players.

I'm extremely glad to hear this.

I'm going to be PMing some TOs who are better than I am (Plank, AlphaZealot, etc) and try to get suggestions and advice on how to get a sponsor for a tournament.
Even if it's Bawls (Free drinks for everyone!), I'd be stoked to have one.
