I don't see any errors in this video either. On the motion sensor bomb part, surprised he didn't go on saying it got a major overhaul in Brawl. And it felt odd they did the Pichu/Pikachu thing as that's more of a fan theory than a fact. However, the "focus on the Wii's online capabilities" part doesn't sound right at all as Brawl's online is absolute garbage and I've seen other Wii games with way better online (and I love Brawl).

Guys I read here that Sakurai once said that Sm4sh's trailer will be the best one. I need a source, I think it was from his twitter. Any help?

I do remember him saying something like that at one point a few weeks back, can't remember where he said nor did I save a link to it. Honestly it's something that's not worth digging up IMO considering E3 is next month and that it doesn't mean much in the long term/have anything to do with the development history of the series.

Not that topping Brawl's E3 2006 trailer wouldn't be awesome, honestly I'd be a major site to behold if he could pull it off considering the former trailer is already one of, if not the best trailer Nintendo's put out (I blame Solid Snake).

Kinda surprised they did yet another one but oh well. It's mostly minor stuff relating to stages/items, but don't I see any errors in it so enjoy.

Just updated with the new Smash Wii & 3DS site. I hope everyone's enjoying the new info, especially that Sakurai went back to the Villager after dismissing him during Brawl's development.

Feel free to post any new interviews or new info related to the game here. I will update the main posts as soon as possible should something come up.

Hey ---. Is it possible that you could put dates on the new SSB4 info links?
Just so we can keep track of what is new and what we might have missed.

Might be better to put the new stuff at the top of the post as well since that's what most people will be looking for.

Thanks a million.

That's not a bad idea, I'll have to see about it. Honestly I need to reorganize the main posts in general.

Speaking of which, we did get another Sakurai interview:

Mostly states that Mega Man was a very special case (which he also said in the Direct, we have yet to know what this truly means, however) for getting in. Compares 3rd parties yet again with dealing with Pokemon characters. There are also a "What If" question that Sakurai himself asks should a Namco Bandai character get in. Says there is more to come from his particular interview*.

Got two more articles:

Not enough time to bring back every Smash Bros character

Basically says that Time Constraints and work load are the reason for cuts, says that we can't bring back every character "who's been in Smash up to this point." Which should be taken as Brawl's roster with the cut Melee vets rather than Brawl in particular.

How Pokemon characters are chosen

Basically says they look at whatever Pokemon are popular and or currently noteworthy in the various Pokemon media when looking for characters, aka, Pokemon that are remember-able. In addition, Sakurai then applies his own set of standards to see if they'll fit on the roster as a whole/add something new to the game.

I just want you to know that you're doing the world a huge favor, Tri. It's a shame this thread is so underutilized, compared to what it could be. :(

Gamespot interview with Sakurai. Stating some of his thoughts on fighting games and a better snippet on customization. Stating you'll be able to change "the direction of the attacks".

Man I was hoping to be the one to post that. :smirk:

There's so many good and hilarious things I don't know where to begin with it's dissection. Sakurai just ripped the whole Fighting Game Genre a new one while saying his stance on the Melee VS. Brawl BS.

I wanted to post at least one thing in here!

I got to say, I agree with you though. There's a bunch of stuff in there we can discuss. Aside from the fact that Sakurai is aware of the Brawl vs Melee thing.

New French Interview
Here's the translation.

Basically says he's open to DLC but nothing is currently planned, cites Fallout 3 as a good example.
Is looking into the technical limitations of patches.
De-confirms turning off stage hazards like PlayStation All Stars (which he teases a little bit).
Compares the Mario Kart series to Smash.
Still mum on story mode and what he means by customization.
Is done with character requests, the roster, however, is not completely finalized and is still working on getting as many characters in as possible.

Also I am sorry that I have not yet updated the main OP with all of these new interviews (I think I even missed one or two from the other day), I am still planning out how I want to tackle what will be a large update.

Famitsu translation

Not much new here. Says again that the Villager was originally planned for Brawl (which is something you should all already know if you've read this thread) but was taken out due to not being fit for fighting. He changed his mind when he thought that the gameplay style of the Villager outweighed his prior worries about including him.

Says he wanted a character that had a dancing sort of vibe to it, this is where the Wii Fit Trainer came in.

Wanted to go the extra mile with Mega Man instead of just ripping his old MvC moveset. Wanted to keep him true to his original self by implementing all the Robot Master attacks, 8 Bit themed animations/blank face. Says the team each had their own ideas for such a moveset and that he took ideas from everyone.

I don't think it apt to refer to the Smash U & 3DS site as a Dojo quite yet. It's actually more akin to the original Brawl site that just had a few character pages at this point. Would anyone else care to chime in on this?

Sakurai already stated that there won't be a dojo like last time.

This is all we get.

IGN finally finished their complete interview with Sakurai

  • Of the currently planned characters none have been cut yet.
  • Is against a Rankings System for online, but has some sort of plan (?) so that people will be able to play with those in the same skill level.
  • Realizes past issues with balance, still is planning to do the same old approach with balancing, hopes that patch will remedy those issues if possible.
  • Realizes that SSE was rather stale, wants to the new Single Player more rewarding.
  • Ice Climbers (who are more or less implied) among other possible characers are having issues on the 3DS with programming.
  • Is still not sure and is currently playing around with what fits best between each version.

So yeah, sounds like Sakurai has learned from his mistakes with Melee & Brawl (except for maybe balancing?), but on the other hand some of it sounds like he himself doesn't have any true firm idea about what direction to take with each respective game.

Just added two more old articles that I found. One on Sakurai's views on Victory & Defeat (from back in 2003), and one on just how poorly coded Brawl was.

That's interesting, thought there'd be a bit more too it though.

Also only 17 years? Should have went with Capcom, they've been making fighters since the 80s and they have Mega Man too. :troll:

Can't say I'll add that box art, it's a cool design but it's totally fake. I do hope they don't make the game as dark as Melee or Brawl though. I'd like to see a nice and colorful game like that box art (or 64) for a change.
Pff. Capcom can't balance their games for crap. Namco seems to have more balanced fighters nowadays. i think nintendo made the right choice with them.

I still remember those old flash animations on the Smash 64 site. I'm talking about the ones where the characters were in the boxing ring.

By that list, after the first trailer we received only one new character (Fox, also returning) in an ENTIRE YEAR. How did we pulled that off, really? I don't remember being so thirsty.
This makes me calmer for the actual situation.

This thread has SO much information. I wish we could confirm some unproven info like the old Famitsu articles.

Even if all of this information is present, I have this urge to compile all the information related to why each character is picked, considered, dropped, or cut... surely I'm not the only one?

7.) Samus

This is up for debate, but a lot of fans pointed out that Samus's role in the trailer to transform into Zero Suit didn't confirm her as a fighter. She wasn't technically confirmed until the Dojo announced her and started using her in pictures.
