That said, I would like to believe that the characters that show up in Smash aren't one version in particular, instead they are a fusion of all the games they have appeared in.
That seems true for Link in SSBB, seeing as he has a fairy with him. (Navi?)
There's a fairy in the Wii version of TP, but it's just a cursor; nothing more.

One thing that SSB4 Link draws from Skyward Sword is the blue sword effect, as you can see on the image below.

I just realized that he greatly resembles Soul Calibur Link, especially had he been in SC5.

Even so, there are considerable differences between SoulCalibur Link and SSB4 Link, namely:
  • SC Link's ears are bigger
  • Different hairstyle
  • Tunic's design has considerable differences
The only similarity is the face.

Soul Calibur Link resembled Ocarina of Time Link most to me.

I hope they have a pink haired Link as a color swap that would be a cool throw back to AlttP.
And if we get lucky we might even get a couple others:

Well, SoulCalibur Link, much like SSBM Link, are both based on Ocarina of Time Link.
If you compare them with official art for Ocarina of Time, you will see they're very similar.

This would be such a great example of auto-irony (is this a term in the US?). Nintendo isn't capable of that, I was surprised the Virtual Boy was even mentioned in Brawl.
Seriously I would actually love it and main it.

Also Cartoon Link with a taunt in which he says "EXCUUUUUSE ME, PRINCESS"

I guess Link really isn't a silent character after all. :awesome:
BTW are those games canon?
It would make my day trying to see someone go and place them in the Zelda timeline

I am able to see the Zelda series in a normal manner without thinking of the CDi games, but if someone actually managed to find a place to put them in the timeline, I would never see the Zelda series the same way again.

And BTW Mario isn't truly a silent character either.
In fact, he has several lines in Mario VS Donkey Kong. He speaks in full sentances and has a conversation with Donkey Kong at the end of the game.

here's what Sakurai says about third parties.

"Kotaku: I know Mega Man is a character that has been requested for a very long time - is there something different about this game that will make it okay to bring in Mega Man? Have you tried to include Mega Man before?

Sakurai: No, actually, there was never any consideration to having him in previous games, and if you think about it, there hasn't been really a precedent for third-party characters joining other than very special cases like Sonic, during the last game . It's something that wasn't even possible. We're now going into versions four and five within the series—this is only something that's now possible."
Wonder what this means for Sonic, and Snake?
Oh hey that sounds pretty coo-

Wait...

Tell me i'm stupid or this was a translation error or this was already known or something, because Sakurai saying he's interested in a fifth installment just blew my mind right there.

If you read on, you will find out that he's talking about both the WiiU and 3DS version.

Of course but you'd think they'd both still count as the 'fourth' installment in the series technically. It's like saying Assassin's Creed has more installments than it actually does because it has versions on the PS3, Xbox 360 and the Wii-U. :p

EDIT: Ah darn, okay, don't worry then guys i'm just stupid. :p

The fact that people rather play as Waluigi over Banjo makes me depressed.
Well at least King K. Rool is 2nd. (Not that it makes me any less depressed that people rather play as Waluigi over Banjo)

The thing that makes his statement odd is the games aren't going to be heavily different beyond the courses. And obviously, the focus of each game.

But they're still practically the same game, kind of like comparing Pokemon Red to Blue, except even more similar.

@Moon Monkey: Waluigi is in more games, and is actually possible as a playable character. It's unknown what the exact reasons are. I doubt he's overall more truly popular than Banjo, but if we take everything into account, it shouldn't be surprising Waluigi won. He has far more exposure fan-wise as well as Nintendo-wise. He's even the villain of a Mario game(and is a bad guy in another). He's also presented many times as more of a Villain than a Hero on the moral scale among many games.

Well I read one of the articles regarding it, he was talking about the connectivity between games and he mentioned how rather than the power, the directionality of the moves could be customised... thinking of Mario's Fsmash being a little bigger or maybe his Bair comes out a little further upwards/downwards and such or perhaps his Dsmash is longer at the expense of speed... that actually made me really happy. I think I can see possible balancing solutions in that if they do it well and from the sounds of it they ARE doing it well.

So yeah, with more and more information coming out about this game, i'm actually getting really, really excited. I'm loving the direction they're taking and i'm really hoping it will be as good as they're making it sound. :p

I certainly hope it's better than that. It sounds even more shallow than Brawl's Stage Creator. Also, it's probably an unique character. I.E. Mii.

I'm just glad to see MegaMan and Villager. I'm neutral on Wii Fit Trainer, but she's cool enough.

First, Nintendo refuses to make a F-Zero and Starfox game, on account of them not being able create any innovative ideas to apply to these franchises and now THIS?

My childhood is in shambles....

How is this Nintendo's fault?

They can't buy the Banjo & Kazooie series.

Again, this is all fans. And many being realistic enough to realize that B&K have a zero percent chance. As for full fans of Waluigi, his exposure and given lots of good fan characterization helps. Nuts & Bolts wasn't received terribly well either. But the games with Waluigi overall... have. So again, not terribly surprising.

Albeit, the only Rare character I'd want in Smash is Fulgore, but still, Banjo & Kazooie would be a cooler pick than Waluigi, no disagreements on that. Doesn't change what the polls say, though.

Blame Microsoft here.

@King: Sadly, there's not many women we can even expect added to Smash at this point. Palutena, Medusa, Captain Syrup, Kat and Ana, Ashley, Dixie Kong, and Krystal are pretty much the major ones or have some bigger notes of Nintendo. Or they're unique.

Wii Fit Trainer already had uniqueness going for her, and frankly, it was nice to see a new female that just isn't the same person overall. Brawl added zero unique women. Just another Samus.

I wasn't blaming Nintendo for Banjo's new ownerships, and the creation of-- well partially Nintendo's fault for the creation of Waluigi. :awesome: But I guess Wario HAD to get a doubles partner for tennis.
I was more so getting at all these events piling up in succession, and destroying my favorite childhood games I grew up on.

But fans being realistic, can be a pretty big reason as to why he is so low.

Also, Brawl in the Family helps. And Waluigi having a personality. Crotch Chop anyone?

A second party created Waluigi. Miyamoto didn't. Which may be why he hasn't put him in the Platformers yet.

@Metal Overlord: Remove the leash Microsoft has around him and play him like a baws?

Well If Nintendo didn't create Waluigi, they definitely are to blame in his approval to get into the game, since they were the ones publishing the game.
But let me calm down, my blood pressure is rising. Must be because of all this :salt:.

I always knew Waluigi was popular and liked, just didn't know people would prefer a Waluigi over Banjo. It scares me to even ask if people would rather play a Waluigi stand alone game (which might be cool depending on how they do it), over a Banjo.

Really? It doesn't sound shallow to me at all. Think of it competitively. This could mean LT characters could, by the virtue of a few well placed customisations that increase hitboxes and such, could become MT or even HT characters. People have to stop thinking Brawl is so ridiculously unbalanced that it would take major character overhauls to do anything. Bowser in Brawl would have been rather fantastic with a few of his moves being faster. Lucas and Ness would easily have been high mid had they not had serious CG issues, and they would have gone higher if Ness had a less punishable PKT1 and Lucas's startup to grab was quicker, etc etc.

From the looks of it, this is Sakurai saying 'we could go crazy with this, but no.' He's actually catering more to the competitive audience here and it's deliberate. That's what makes this so beautiful for me. He's actually reducing the craziness that could come with this (leveling up or customising power and such) that casuals would probably destroy each other for and made the changes more subtle. This allows casuals to make small changes to their character that they like without there being wars on the internet about what setup for each character is better and it would allow the competitive community to achieve some real balance. So basically, Sakurai has said 'sorry casuals' (but i'll make it clear now, this isn't anything against casuals, this is just praise for Sakurai thinking about competitive play) and has tried to help US out a bit.

So if that in itself isn't exciting enough for you, then think of it's significance. Sakurai, throughout everything we've heard, seems to be trying to allow the game to be played competitively and be balanced (no tripping, slightly faster gameplay ((well it's arguable as to how competitive that is but i'm taking it as a good sign anyway :p)), major overhauls of characters we know are considered low tier ((Bowser, Samus, etc.)) and interesting balancing of new characters ((It would appear the villager can only use his Bowling Ball when on a ledge?)) and so on) whilst allowing casual players to have as much fun as they like with the game.

It's not Melee, it's not Brawl, it's something different and from what i'm hearing it's everything i'm looking for in a game I want to play competitively. I couldn't be more hyped for this game because all the signs are just pointing upwards for me.

So that's why i'm so excited for little things like this. :p

Wii Fit Trainer actually made me a little less excited for the game.
I reckon she was new, refreshing and interesting personally. It's not like we have THAT few slots that she's probably going to take someone like Mewtwo's spot or whoever goes there but she's a signal that we should expect something new and different and I actually really like that. She reminds me a lot of ZSS and although I couldn't originally, the more I think about it the more I can see her as fitting in really well with the cast of characters in this game.

I reckon for her, it's a case of 'why not?' personally.

Take it as you will but i'm thinking she won't have much impact on anything else and she could be a really fun addition. I dunno. I might just be excited for this game for the sake of being excited but I'd say not because I can think of things that would make me less excited for the game...

It's just, none of them actually seem to be the case so i'm just getting really excited. :D

GET HYPED!!! :3

Wii Fit Trainer actually made me a little less excited for the game.
I honestly don't understand why it would make you less excited for the game. It made me more excited. From what I ahve seen the main reason people seem to hate her inclusion is because it hurts their chance of getting their fave character, but more then half the time people's fave characters don't stand that good of a chance getting in anyway, and will end up blaiming her if theirs don't get in. But in all honestly she shows just how creative Nintendo can get, or I guess Sakurai would be a better way to say it I guess lol, with her being very unexpected and rathe rout of the box and unique moveset. I just can't see why people dislike her inclusion so much. lol.

Mewtwo and King K.Rool being the top 2 pleases me a lot. Isaac having the highest vote for a new series character after Little Mac is also a good thing.

Lemme read what else has been said.

It's the same story as with Brawl.

People hated the really unique R.O.B (and some still do) as this evil character who kept their favorite character out of the game and want nothing more than all things bad to happen to that really unique character.

Same story here with Miss Fit. I think once we get close to launch and more newcomers are revealed, people will start blaming her for why their most wanted and loved character didn't get in.

It's okay though, she can take them. :D

Well, everyone would like or dislike her for different reasons. Personally, I'm a bit irritated that out of all the female characters they could have added and/or revealed first, they chose one a character that appeared in one game, wasn't the star of the game, has almost no detail, and one that would (and officially now is) extremely vunerable to perv fanart. Also, I've fought a number of Peach players online in Basic Brawl, and I'm annoyed by how they spam Peach's dair while levitating. I can't even imagine how annoyed I'm going to be if I lose to a Wii Fit Trainer... regardless, her inclusion does not concern me over what characters will get in or not.
