Game Physics and the Ken Combo

A much simpler explaination is that Fox was simply DIing that way. That trajectory is, after all, the expected result of perpendicular DI on an upsmash. Perhaps Fox was expecting an upthrow. As KevinM says, hitting an odd upsmash hitbox is an option too. One that fairs better under Occam's...

Game Physics and the Ken Combo

Why should it be different? Moves overwrite each other when going against each other, but add up if they go in the same direction? If momentum adds, it should always add. I'm also pretty sure this shouldn't happen. Each successive move in a combo will knock you back farther and farther, but...

Game Physics and the Ken Combo

I've already pointed out Falco's lasers and Samus' bombs stopping people dead in their tracks, he responded by saying those attacks were designed to do so since they had no knockback and thus didn't operate the same way. That makes no sense, but I used a jab as an example and he said nothing...

Game Physics and the Ken Combo

Hey Melee Community, I have a pair of quick questions, one on game physics and one specifically about the Ken Combo that's related to it. First of all, I've always understood that each individual attack, regardless of context, has its own knockback, its own momentum, hitstun and its own...

Important Carefully Ask PPMD about the Tiara Guy

Hey A friend of mine is saying the Ken Combo is never escapable, and I'm pretty sure it can be DIed out of. Who's right?

    My Fox

I think that to improve, you need to find a better opponent. Yes, the advice you're being given here is correct: you need to vary up your approaches (a more varied approach would lead to more grab use naturally, if you put in a marginal effort to approach with grabs sometimes, you'd get used...

You Wake Up as your Main

If I woke up as my Brawl main, I would first whip a shoelace randomly out and watch in awe as it magically homes in on the nearest gutter and yanks me up to my roof. I would then curse as my shoelace fails to do anything useful if there's a bird already sitting on the gutter, and wonder how such...

Infinites: Why, exactly, are they allowed?

MaxX Prosmasher Tim And just another example to ease your mind: Phanna I think Yuna is right. How difficult a technique is does not influence whether it will be used or not. It will. Someone will perfect it and use it.

    Holy crap japan... haha wow.

That first paragraph there is blatant stereotyping and totally irrelevant to this discussion, I'm sorry. Even assuming that it's true really gets you nowhere: Whether or not an Asian Starcraft player can beat an American Starcraft player has absolutely no correlation with the overall smash bros...

The problem with limited grab "solutions" (regarding CG)

If you suck enough to get grabbed again immediately after being released from a grab, then what's the difference whether your opponent can chainthrow or not? They could just grab you again with any character, even if they can't chaingrab. So by your logic, we should make it so you can't grab...

The problem with limited grab "solutions" (regarding CG)

I'm fairly sure you misunderstand the rule people are trying to implement, homer2020. I think a "5 grab limit" means "if you grab your opponent, you're allowed a maximum of 5 chaingrabs", not "you are allowed to grab only 5 times a match". I could be the one completely wrong, but I really...

Please explain why Melee is so awesome

If "randomly pressing buttons to make attacks stronger than they used to be" is what won Melee, then what seperates, say, me from PC Chris? PC would probably 4-stock me and come out of the match with less damage than when it started. However, we can both shffl. We can both wavedash. We both...

What's the easiest way to do noncontact mortar slide?

QFT. Took me less than 20 minutes to learn this method fluently, and it allows you to charge the mortar if you feel so inclined.

    Really strange and mystical problem.

It sounds like the copy of Brawl is corrupt. There's an error of some kind on the disc that only triggers when a certain in-game event occurs, and once that's there, the game can't load up anymore. My guess is it's one of the characters or stages, perhaps?

    DI is confusing.

The definition of DI is "tilting the analog stick to alter your trajectory in that direction". While the term "DI" is often associated with "DIing a hit" (because it's simultaniously the most useful and the most obscure use of it), you can "DI back during an aerial" for example. Say you...
